When John Surma led the charge to fire Coach Joe Paterno on Nov 9, 2011 he and Governor Tom Corbett took the initial step in a plan that would eventually make the Sandusky Child Molestation Scandal into the Penn State Scandal even though Sandusky was 11 years removed as a Penn State coach and employee.
John Surma was Vice Chair of the PSU Board of Trustees and his brother Victor J. Surma was a former letterman who played football for Coach Joe Paterno in the early 1970's. Both were big supporters of Paterno who offered open praise for the coach:

What would cause Victor Surma Sr. to go from that glowing praise for Joe Paterno in 2003 to this threatening indictment in 2007?

What caused this incredible change of heart over 2 years?
As it happens we have an answer that fits that question:
In 2000 Victor B Surma the son of Surma brother Victor J was a star receiver on the Upper St Clair football team. Young Vic received a full scholarship offer to play football for Kent State University in Ohio. But his father intervened and asked Joe Paterno to allow his son to walk on without a scholarship to play for Penn State.

Penn State had a stable of excellent receivers and young Vic was simply not equipped to out perform them for playing time. During his 3 years with the team he never got playing time. But this is not what upset the Surma brothers.
As it happen Victor B. Surma was gay. He began a relationship with an older man who was married and because his father was disappointed in his inability to gain playing time and his sexual orientation he turned to drugs. After failing a drug test and a break up with his older partner young Vic disappeared for several days and was found holed up in a motel outside of State College. His coaches told his father that he needed to get some help before he could rejoin the team.
But his father did not get help and Vic left for Los Angeles where he started a career as a male model
This is what preceded the Surma brother's change of heart about Joe Paterno. It wasn't playing time it was Victor B's drift into what the Surma brother's considered a deviant lifestyle they blamed on Joe Paterno.
In 2006 the Surma family home in Upper St Clair was put on the market and Victor J. Surma's wife Kathy filed for divorce. In the meantime Victor was seen online ranting about Joe Paterno and making gay bashing comments:
In August of 2010 Victor J. Surma made the following derogatory remark on the online forum of John Steigerwald concerning Joe Paterno.
The backlash of the elder Vic Surma and his brother John's vendetta are far worse than the Barney Frank Fairy Boat ride comment on a public forum but this shows the prejudice that relates to his reaction to his son's sexual orientation.
THE RUMOR MILL
No less than seven confidential sources supplied and confirmed parts of the following information:
Vic Jr. had a pretty bad drug problem that went back to his time with the team. He had at least one positive drug test.
One reason for hard feelings may lie in his personal relationship with an older man not involved with coaching or the team. (Not Jerry Sandusky). This guy was married but in a relationship with Vic Jr while he was in college. When he tried to cut it off Vic lost it and went missing for days holed up in a motel just outside of Pittsburgh. A PSU coach concerned by this tired to bring him back because they were worried for his overall safety.
Vic Sr was notified that it might be best for Vic Jr to stay away from the football program until he got some help. This was a problem the coaches couldn't and shouldn't deal with. The coaching staff tried to get help for him and he refused the help
The Surma family put the problem on Joe and never forgave him. Joe then washed his hands if the situation as he should have. If Vic Jr. would not accept the help he was offered there was nothing else that Joe or the coaching staff could or should do. This was a Surma family problem.
Vic Jr then left Pennsylvania and went to California and Florida and worked as a male model. His modling and preferences were made public and he continued to have a substance abuse problem according to no less than three separate sources.
One source said he returned to Pittsburgh and went into rehabilitation in 09 or 2010 and got a good job but in Nov 2011 he relapsed and lost his job. This relapse was not because of being upset about Jerry Sandusky. It was about his father and uncle and what happened with Joe Paterno and Penn State.All of this led up to the Nov 9 2011 meeting where John Surma and Tom Corbett railroaded the the BOT into firing Joe Paterno. Along with the firing of President Graham Spanier these insane actions signaled the national media that even Penn State's Board of Trustees believed Penn State was libel for well over 200 million dollars in settlements in what changed the Sandusky Child Molestation Scandal into the Penn State Sex Scandal.
There were 2 incidents at Penn State way back in 1998 and 2001 involving Sandusky. The PA Dept of Public Welfare and CYS investigated the 1998 shower incident and judged Sandusky innocent. The Mike McQueary rape incident was judged "not guilty" by the Sandusky jury. So why would a Penn State Board of Trustees publicly declare liability on the part of PSU by firing Paterno and Spanier? Penn State was in no way libel for Jerry Sandusky's crimes. Not only was Sandusky 11 years removed as a PSU employee; as it turns out the one charge that tied Sandusky's crimes to Penn State was adjudicated "Not Guilty" by the Sandusky jury. Sandusky did not rape a boy in the Penn State showers as claimed by Mike McQueary.
And as of this date the charges against the Penn State administrators has still not gone to trial and it's looking very much like that will never happen. Graham Spanier's attorney has sued for dismissal and the only witness against Tim Curley and Gary Schultz has made so many contradictory statements it will be impossible for any jury to convict.
So there you have it. Victor B. Surma was a beautiful young gay man but the Surma brothers couldn't stand it so they took it out on Joe Paterno - and as a result cost Penn State millions and a great reputation.
Usually the Gay community is beset by fools claiming that men who molest children are gay and that is the defamation suffered at times like these but in this case a young man is dead and a University has been defamed and financially impaired because the Surma's couldn't accept Victor B Surma for who he was.
